UV Protection

Your sunglasses should block 98.5 percent of UV-A rays. They should also block at least 99 percent of UV-B .

UV Protection for the Eyes

Most individuals know to drink plenty of water, and to protect their skin from those harmful UV rays by wearing sunscreen or a hat during the hottest part of the day. But, did you know that your eyes also need protection?

Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation not only damages your skin, it can also damage the eye permanently. Sun exposure, especially if combined with glare of pavement, can cause the equivalent of a temporary burn to the surface of the eye. Doctors are also concerned that repeated UV exposure can cause permanent damage to either the lens of the eye or can lead to certain eye diseases. UV rays from the sun may contribute to the development of sight-threatening eye diseases such as age related macular degeneration, cataracts and melanoma.

Everyone is at risk for UV damage to the eyes. Some people are at an even higher risk including: senior citizens, contact lens wearers and those taking certain medications, such as birth control and antibiotics. Children are also at an increase risk, as they spend more time outdoors and their developing eyes let in more UV rays.

What can you do to protect your eyes? The best thing is to invest in a good pair of UV blocking sunglasses and wear them whenever you are outdoors. When buying sunglasses, it is important to look for a lens that blocks at least 98 percent of UV radiation, both UV-A and UV-B.

clip_station.gifAsk about Custom Clip-Ons. Custom clip-ons offer the same protection as blueglassesdedicated prescription sun wear at a substantial savings. Polarized custom clip-ons reduce eyestrain from glare and offer sun protection from harmful UV rays. They can be made to perfectly fit your new or existing prescription eyeglasses.

We look forward to assisting you and your family in safely enjoying the sun and helping you ensure strong, healthy eyes now and in the future. So, grab your shades and have a great time enjoying the outdoors!

Types of lenses offered at Mercedes Opticalsingle.jpg

Single Vision
- This all-purpose lens is available in all materials, and can be used for either distance or near vision correction.

Multifocals - will be suggested when both distance and near correction are needed together in a single lens. Multifocal lenses have many new variations, such as no-line progressives, bifocals and trifocals.

No-line progressives - correct for far (driving a vehicle), intermediate (viewing the dashboard), and near (reading a map) vision all in one lens. Because there is no visible line, progressives have the appearance of single-vision lenses and are, therefore, the most cosmetically desirable multifocal. Progressives are available in all lens materials.

Bifocals - provide both far (driving) and near (reading a map) correction in one lens.

Trifocals - are basically progressive lenses with visible lines. The majority of the lens is for distance viewing, while the center portion is divided into intermediate and near-viewing segments.

Polarized Lenses

Polarized lenses reduce glare, making them the best lenses you can buy for your sunglasses. Polarized lenses come many colors and can be combined with other coatings, like front mirrors and rear anti-reflective coatings, in your prescription, to give you the ultimate sunglass lens.

Benefits of polarized lenses include: Comfort which reduces glare for safe and relaxed vision, improved visual clarity, greater depth perception and more vibrant colors, Full UV protection and polarized lenses prevent possibility of temporary blindness due to extremes in light.

Trilogy (Trivex) Lenses

Trilogy is a revolutionary new product that brings you the best balance of lens clarity and safety in an ultra-lightweight lens. In the past, if you wanted an ultra thin lens, you had to compromise on the quality of your lens clarity. Trilogy lenses deliver exceptional visual clarity, while eliminating eye magnification, giving you a more natural look. They are great for every lifestyle and they are exceptionally impact resistant. Vision is valuable, so protecting it makes good sense. These lenses are made with an ultra-light-weight material, so light they practically float on water.  By design, Trilogy lenses are thin and light. You will never have to worry about heavy eyewear or repeatedly pushing your spectacles back into a comfortable position.

Anti-Reflective Lenses

Reflective glare and ghost images are distracting and can be dangerous, especially when driving at night. They also cause unnecessary eye fatigue and eyestrain while working on computers. With anti-reflective lenses, up to 99% of the reflective glare will be eliminated. Your night driving will be safer and easier, and the hours you spend in front of a computer, whether for work or entertainment, will become more comfortable. Increased light transmission improves your visual performance. The amount of light that reaches your eyes will be increased by up to 13% when you select anti-reflective lenses. As a result, you will experience clearer, sharper vision. These lenses also actually repel dirt and dust from the surface on your lenses. With these lenses you will find your solution to glare and visual discomfort, while looking your best.

Transitional Lenses

These lenses are the most convenient way to enjoy better vision, indoors and out, today and tomorrow. Transitional lenses are clear indoors and at night but automatically adjust their level of tint to changing light conditions outdoors.  And just like sun block protects your skin, Transitional lenses help preserve the health and wellness of your eyes for the future by blocking 100% of UV rays, so you can see better tomorrow too.

Mirror Lenses

Mirrored lenses reduce the amount of light that reaches your eyes, so they can provide extra comfort in strong glare conditions. Mirrors can be semi-opaque or opaque from the front, so other people can see your eyes a little, or not at all.

Gradient Lenses

These usually range from fairly dark at the top of the lens to a clear bottom, but they're also available in different gradations. Gradient lenses that are clear or light on the bottom make it easy to see the dash when you're driving, but are usually less effective if anything below your line of vision will be reflecting light up at you.
